Behavioural treatment of urine spraying

Aim: to make areas the cats to use less attractive or unsuitable for the cat, while making the litter tray as attractive and accessible as possible:

·         Clean the soiled area to eliminate smells eg with Antiodor. Avoid ammonia disinfectants

·         Change the significance of the soiled area by placing items there such as food and toys

·         Spray the cat with a water pistol if caught in the act (unless anxiety-related)

·         Provide one litter tray per cat and an extra one in another area

·         Vary the type of litter or add another litter tray with different litter as cats have different preferences

·         Clean the tray at least daily, preferably whenever used

·         Spend 10-15 mins per day at a set time playing, grooming and otherwise interacting with the cat on its own

·         Consider using Feliway, a calming cat pheromone
