Dear Client,
Data loss from Downs Veterinary Practice
Last week, a backup device went missing from the Downs Veterinary Practice. The backup included clients’ names, postal addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. It also included details of pets and the treatment they have received. The backup did not include any financial information – no credit cards and no bank account details. However, this backup may have contained some of your personal data.
We do not believe that the backup drive was stolen; it had been placed in an unmarked envelope and so the most likely explanation is that it was accidentally thrown away. However, we have to assume that there is a small chance that it might find its way into the wrong hands, we have notified the police of the missing item and are notifying you so that you can be alert to potential scams. For example, if you receive an email or phone call asking you for money to pay our vet bill or telling you to contact us on a different phone number, please do not do so.
We have also reported this incident to the Information Commissioner’s Office. Please be assured we take data security extremely seriously, and are currently working with our IT support providers to implement the most up-to-date methods of maximising the security of our data systems.
If you would like to verify any communication from us or about your pet, please call the practice on the usual number, 0117 962 2828, and we will be happy to help.
I am personally very sorry about this. If you would like to discuss any issues or concerns arising from this matter with me, please don’t hesitate to contact me at the Practice.
Yours sincerely,
Damien Bush
