Our Onsite MRI Scanner

At Downs Veterinary Practice, we proudly offer our state-of-the-art on-site MRI scanner, a significant investment in our commitment to exceptional veterinary care. This advanced technology enables precise diagnostics, enhancing our ability to identify and address complex medical conditions in your pet.

Our MRI capabilities position us as a leading referral center for veterinary practices across Bristol and the surrounding areas. With this cutting-edge equipment on-site, we conduct thorough evaluations without the need for external referrals, ensuring timely and comprehensive care right here at our facility.

The MRI scanner is crucial for assessing neurological, orthopedic, and soft tissue conditions, allowing us to diagnose issues such as tumors, injuries, and diseases of the brain, spine, abdomen, and joints. This empowers our veterinary team to develop targeted treatment plans, improving outcomes for your pet.

Why perform an MRI scan?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a versatile diagnostic tool that examines the brain for tumors, aneurysms, bleeding, and nerve injuries, as well as issues with the eyes and ears.

It evaluates the discs and nerves of the spine for conditions like spinal stenosis, disc bulges, and tumors. In the abdomen and pelvis, MRI identifies problems in organs, effectively diagnosing tumors, bleeding, infections, and blockages.

Additionally, it assesses bone and joint health, identifying conditions such as arthritis, TMJ issues, tumors, cartilage damage, and infections.

MRI is also valuable for providing detailed insights into issues identified on X-rays, ultrasounds, or CT scans.

Dog & Cat MRI Costs

With the significant investment needed to install and maintain MR-scanners, allied to the extensive training undertaken by the staff, MR-scans are expensive.

However, we believe that it is vital for such powerful diagnostic tools to be accessible to as many patients as possible.

The approximate starting cost of scanning is £2100 (this includes the necessary anaesthetic and hospitalisation, and any onward reporting), which compares favourably to other centres.

MRI Promotion

We recognise that in the current economic climate, many owners may struggle to afford the costs of advanced imaging – even if they have some insurance in place.
We are therefore reducing the cost of a basic MR-scan package to approximately £1000 for a limited time (exact cost based on size and breed of animal). This price includes our initial clinical assessment, all associated hospital and anaesthetic costs, and our final report. Further investigations can be included in an itemised estimate based on the patient’s clinical history.
